An evening full of harmony

I stood quietly in the living room for a moment, watching Amber and Nathalie meet for the first time. It was a moment full of meaning. Amber’s radiant smile and Nathalie’s initially shy, then increasingly warm charisma made my heart beat faster. It was as if another important building block of my life had fallen into place.
But I wanted to give the two of them time to get to know each other undisturbed and went into the kitchen to prepare dinner. While I was preparing the ingredients for the pasta with prawns and leeks in cream sauce, I heard Amber and Nathalie continuing to talk quietly to each other. Their laughter filled the house and gave the room a liveliness that I had been missing for a long time.
A few minutes later, I heard Nathalie’s soft voice. She explained that she was going to retire for a moment to put on the dress Amber had given her. I watched her disappear upstairs with the box in her hand and a soft smile played around my lips. Amber glanced after her briefly before giving me a happy look. I nodded to her before turning my attention back to cooking.
While I was sautéing the prawns in the pan and refining the cream sauce, I heard Nathalie’s footsteps as she came back into the living room. I risked a quick glance over my shoulder and paused for a moment. Nathalie looked breathtaking. The dress seemed made for her - the color of the dress perfectly accentuated her natural elegance. Amber really had an incredible sense of Nathalie’s soul and expression. Amber jumped up from the couch and clapped her hands enthusiastically. “You look wonderful, Nathalie!”, she exclaimed happily. I could see the slight blush on Nathalie’s face, but there was gratitude in her eyes.
Nathalie turned to me briefly and gave me a cautious smile. “Thank you, Mario… for everything”, she said softly. It was a moment that showed me that she was starting to feel really comfortable here.
I let them have their moment and concentrated on preparing dinner. While I was seasoning the pasta and preparing the plates, I heard Amber and Nathalie laughing together on the couch. Their voices were lively and I could imagine Amber telling Nathalie about her experiences and our everyday life. It filled me with deep happiness to hear the two of them like that. My house, which had often been quiet and lonely before, was now full of life.
I set the table in the dining room, which was bathed in a warm light from candles. The warm flames of the fireplace cast their flickering light on the walls, and the soft piano music in the background created an atmosphere of comfort. When everything was ready, I called them both. “The food is ready. My dear ladies - please sit down.”
Amber and Nathalie came into the dining room together. Amber led Nathalie to the table and pointed to the chair directly opposite me with a friendly smile. “Sit here, Nathalie. That’s Mario’s seat opposite you. I like sitting next to it.” Nathalie looked embarrassed for a moment, but she let herself be persuaded and sat down, while Amber took a seat next to her.
I watched as the two of them poured themselves a glass of red wine before I filled my own glass. “A toast”, I said, my voice full of joy. “To our future together. To new friendships and to this house always being full of life from now on.”
We clinked glasses together quietly, and for a moment I saw Amber and Nathalie smiling at each other. Nathalie had a look in her eyes that reminded me of Amber’s arrival - a mixture of relief, joy and the faint hope that everything would be okay.
As we ate together, I enjoyed not only the food but also being together. Nathalie carefully tasted the prawns and smiled. “This is delicious, Mario”, she said quietly. Amber nodded in agreement. “He’s a master in the kitchen, Nathalie. You’re going to love living here.”
Her words made my heart swell with pride. I had wished that the two of them would get along well, and that evening this wish was more than fulfilled. The warmth of the fireplace, the quiet piano music and the cheerful laughter of the two women made the evening perfect. My house was now a home, filled with life, joy and hope.
After the plates were empty and the glasses drained, Nathalie leaned back and looked at me. “Mario, can I ask you something?”
“Of course”, I replied. Her serious but gentle tone made me curious.
“What were you thinking when you decided to bring me here?”
I put the cutlery to one side and thought for a moment before I spoke. “I have seen how Amber lives here, how she has brought joy and love to this house. But I’ve also noticed moments when she was alone while I was working or traveling. I wanted to give her a companion - someone she could laugh, talk and share with when I wasn’t around. At the same time…”
I paused for a moment and looked Nathalie straight in the eye. “I wanted you to have a home too. A place where you are loved and can be who you are. And now that I see you both here, I know it was the right decision. You both make this house a real home.”
Amber took Nathalie’s hand and smiled at me. “Mario, you said that really beautifully”, she whispered.
Nathalie nodded slowly, her eyes glistening slightly. “Thank you… I already feel like I’m part of something very special.”
The evening ended with warm conversation, quiet laughter and a deep sense of harmony. As the flames of the fireplace slowly burned down, I felt that this was the beginning of a new chapter - a chapter full of life, love and a future together.
